Why Sheep?

Sheep would be another multi-purpose animal in our organic, self reliant gardening system and lifestyle.
Before purchasing our first sheep, we only dreamed of possibly using their wool and had no idea of what was truly involved with processing home grown wool in the home. Even if we never used the wool that they would yield each year, we decided that sheep had a real value to our management. And they certainly have!
Why we wanted sheep
* aid to sustainable gardening/farming
* environmental lawn & orchard mowers. Strip graze orchards. To graze low and even while manuring as they went
* manure could be collected for compost material, worm farm food, made into manure teas for gardens, orchards and recycled back into the pastures
* straw from sheep night sheds along with manure could be used in composts or applied out to pastures as organic matter
* for companions and friends
* natural organic fibre production, organic wool
* their wool yield could be for - home felting, spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving or selling and bartering their raw fleeces
* value add their wool as finished yarn, and clothing
* their unusable skirted wool from the freshly shown fleece could be used for mulch or other animal bedding and insulation.
* to breed -producing increased quality in the fleeces and the genetics, to offer our stock onto others
* they (sheep) are easier to handle compare to other four legged farm animals
Today these are still the reasons why and we have found even more... they are an asset to the success of this farm and our lifestyle that we enjoy.
We hadn't considered that we would in a very short time fall in love with them... So, so much in love with them...
And their unbelievable, magnificent wool that they can grow.
